Hi, I'm Raj Kaul.

I’m deeply passionate about Bhangra music and determined to take it to new heights with a unique sound I call Alternative Bhangra. My goal is to push the boundaries of this genre, bringing it into the mainstream while staying true to its traditional roots.

My journey has been an exciting one, transitioning from an IT professional and leading a worship band, to releasing tracks like Zor, Nach Nach, and live lounge sessions. Each release has brought me closer to my dream of sharing the energetic vibes of contemporary Bhangra fused with my distinctive brand of alternative sounds.

My Story

Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are filled with the sounds of Gurdas Maan and Mohammed Rafi, playing on our family's cassette player. Growing up in Birmingham, the heart of UK Bhangra, I was equally influenced by global hits like Bad and Thriller and captivated by the energy of the UK Bhangra bands. These early experiences have shaped the sound I create today.

My first memories of performing were at family parties, where I’d mimic Bollywood classics, encouraged by my mother and massi. Even back then, I was drawn to creating my own versions of songs—sometimes in a humorous way, like my parody of Apache Indian’s Arranged Marriage. It wasn’t until college that I wrote my first serious song, Tere Na Te Glassy. A moment of inspiration on a bus ride led me to jot down the lyrics, though it would be 10 years before the song was recorded.

Worship Band

Music has always been a key part of my identity. As a Christian, I’m passionate about worshiping God through music. Leading an Asian Christian worship band in Birmingham was a significant part of my journey. Our unique fusion of contemporary Asian music with traditional Christian worship became an annual feature at the Soho Road Easter March, allowing me to express my faith and musical creativity.

Tere Na Te Glassy

My first singing teacher, Meena Kumari Ji, introduced me to producer Jus Ritz. We immediately clicked, and together we created Tere Na Te Glassy, a dancefloor anthem that topped the BritAsia TV charts for three weeks. This marked the start of my professional music career, touring the UK with Jus Ritz and releasing more singles. Though life eventually took over and music became a background thought, my passion for it never faded.

The Future

A lot has changed since then. The music industry has gone digital, and so have I. I've dedicated myself to honing my vocal skills and experimenting with music production. Now, as an independent musician, I have a dedicated team around me, and 2023 has been an incredible year. My singles have been featured on national radio, including BBC Introducing WM, and I’m proud to be the only artist to have performed in 11 melas across the UK.

I’m ready to take Bhangra to the next level, blending the genre’s rich history with modern, alternative influences. Stay tuned—there’s much more to come.
