Birmingham · British Punjabi Songwriter
Raj Kaul
Simply Melody
It starts with a melody, and a voice to carry it. Original songs and carefully curated covers — whether that's just guitar or piano, or a full band. Wherever it goes, it always comes back to the melody and the soul of the music.
About
The story so far
Raj Kaul grew up in Birmingham, singing at family gatherings before he'd have called it singing — Gurdas Maan, Hans Raj Hans and Chamkila playing in the background of a childhood that stayed close to its roots in Punjab. A trip to his ancestral village at eighteen sharpened that connection, and pushed him to take his Punjabi, spoken and sung, seriously. He went on to study classical vocal technique under Meena Kumari Ji.
It was Meena Kumari Ji who introduced him to producer JusRitz in his twenties — a partnership that produced Tere Na Te Glassy, a No. 1 on BritAsia TV for three weeks, and years of UK touring. Life took over for a while after that.
He returned independently in 2020 with Zor (BBC Asian Network), followed by Saah with Ishq Bector in 2023 (BBC Introducing West Midlands) and Baan Pharke, which took him to eleven UK melas that year.
These days the songs are quieter: solo, acoustic, voice first, working on technique with vocal coach Tauseef Akhtar. Melody before production, always.
He also hosts The Raj Kaul Podcast, on musicianship and songwriting — episodes come intermittently these days, but it hasn't stopped.
